Mortared vs. Mortarless Pavers…What’s it all Mean??

There is a lot of unfamiliar terminology that can get thrown around when referring to paving stones. While customers are well aware of the advantages of paving stones many are surprised at the numerous options they have when choosing driveway pavers. From the various colors of pavers to the different styles, paver installation can seem overwhelming if the customer is not clear on all of their choices. This is why it is of the utmost importance to make sure our customers are fully educated on the all the terminology and choices surrounding their paving stone project.
Two paver installation terms we are very commonly asked about are mortarless paving stones and mortared paving stones. The difference between them lies in the way the method used to keep the paving stones in place. Mortared pavers are exactly what they sound like; paving stones with mortar in between them. Mortarless pavers are installed, instead, with a sand mixture that is poured between the pavers.
There are two major problems with the mortared pavers. First off, they create an inflexible environment for the driveway pavers causing the pavers to crack with any heavy movement in the earth (i.e. an earthquake). Secondly, they are very hard to replace because they can not be easily popped out like the mortarless paving stones can be. The mortarless pavers allow for easy replacement if a patio paver were to crack or have a stain. The mortarless pavers also allow for flexibility, making cracking nearly impossible.
