The Amazing Dachshund}

Submitted by: Grant Carroll

The Dachshund, a German breed whose name means badger dog or “hole dog” have been a cute friend to humanity for many years. In fact, this breed is a relic because they can be traced as far back as the ancient Egyptians. These glamorous dogs were first bred to chase, hunt and harass hole-dwelling vermin. Their common physical attributes are a tontine chest, an elongated body, loose skin and short legs. This beautiful breed makes a great pet but can be a challenge to train. The Dachshund is savvy, lively and unconquerable. Any display of modesty is a serious flaw. Beyond that, Dachshunds are loyal, playful, staunch dogs. Because of this, however, some of these “hot dogs” may be hard to train and can display some aggressive behavior.

Maintaining the Dachshund properly is of the utmost importance. They are prone to serious spinal injuries due to their long vertebrae columns and short rib cages. Spinal injuries can be even more prominent when aggravated by the strain of corpulence. Fortunately, many cases of spinal injury can be prevented by taking the proper safety measures. For instance, the safest way to hold a weiner dog is with the “football hold”. This technique ensures skeletal support since he is carried against the body and supported by the forearm. Another important measure to take is to strongly discourage Dachshunds from jumping down from any height. In addition, the owner should invest in dog stairs for all couches and beds. The owner should make sure that any friends and family interacting with the dog are familiar with these rules. These simple steps can greatly reduce unneeded stress on the spinal column.

Despite the high amount of required maintenance, Dachshunds are perfect family dogs. Known to be the symbol of German inheritance, these wonderful dogs are one of the most beloved breeds in America. Their loyalty and lifetime friendship will be a welcome addition to any home.
